No idea what's going on...

I have been experiencing weird breathing/heart palpitations  while on my runs lately. I went to the doctor about it a few weeks ago and she thought maybe it was exercise induced asthma. I got an inhaler, an EKG, and an echocardiogram. The later came back as normal and I have been using my inhaler, but its is getting worse. I tried to run 6 today, about 1.8 miles in it started. I ran-walked the remaining miles out of stubborn frustration. I am suppose to get fit with a  Holter Monitor. Yay me :/ can't wait to wear this baby...

I'm not sure when I'm going to do it, we are going out of town. I will hopefully as soon as we get back. I hate that I have to put it off. I just want to know what is going on!

Anyone experience similar symptoms?

Anyone have to wear one if these things?

Moms RUN This Town

Back in 2011 before I read blogs and was just on the verge of my obsession with running, I was surfing the internet and came across Moms RUN This Town. In desperate need of a running club and with none in town that could accommodate my hectic and busy schedule, I starting my own. It seemed like a good idea and Moms RUN This Town of Virginia Beach was born. I was so optimistic, read:scared as hell that I would look like a desperate fool, and excited to meet other running moms. My goal, my reason for starting our local chapter...I wanted to go to races and know I would know someone other than my husband, who I dragged along. Simple.

Another running mom, Jennie had similiar ideas about finidng running friends and together we got the club up and running. It  started with a FB page and us recruiting our friends and FB acquaintances to be part of what we knew would be a great reason to get out and run. We did a  summer running meetup for a 4 race virtual series the national chapter was putting on; we competed as a team in a local race; and at the end of the summer and virtual series we had a meet up to celebrate and reward our members for getting out and running. From there the group just kept growing!

Today we are close to hitting our 250th member. We have had countless group runs;  race meet-ups; non-running meet-ups; a blog; merchandise; a very active facebook group; a "traveling skirt"; and much more. I can't believe how much it has grown! I see women connecting and supporting each other and it is truly rewarding.  Not only have I meet local  runnng moms, but I've connected with moms across the country that I hope to run into at destination race at sometime.

I can't begin to tell you how rewarding it is has been to help grow this amazing group. It is so amazing to me to know how positively it has effected so many lives. I had had several women come back and tell me how much MRTT has meant to them and the how they are doing things they never thought they could or would. Here is a recent post from one of our members...

As a new member of this sport, I just want to thank you all for being so inspirational just by doing what you do - being moms who run and love it! In the past, I have always dreaded the idea of going for a run. Now, I'm learning to cherish it because I know I am among some amazing women who all have managed to carve time into their days to get their runs in! Over the past couple of years my life has also "grown". I am busier now than I ever thought possible. I have two boys, one of which is now in school and they are both becoming active in their own sports and other activities. My career as an Athletic Trainer for the USN continues to be a source of pride for me as I help rehabilitate injured active duty. Between work and family responsibilities I try to carve out time to train for those PR's I keep chasing. As my plate is truly overflowing I have come to realize in the past several months that just because I try to do it all, doesn't mean it's all going to get done, at least not with out sacrificing something, whether it be sleep, family time, or my sanity. To simplify my life, and I use that word loosely, I have decided it is time for me to pass the MRTT torch onto someone else. Someone that can devote their time to help our other chapter leader, Lei  continue to grow our amazing club. I will miss certain things about being a chapter leader, but I plan on sticking around as a member and enjoying that side of it for while.

Tough Mudder, it's just not meant to be...

No mud, no wall, no barbed wire, no ice cold water, and no electric shock. Tough Mudder Virginia Beach was cancelled due to the course being destroyed by Tropical Storm Andrea.

I'm surprised, because here in VB it hardly rained. Strong winds yes, rain, not so much. I guess TM VB (which was really TM Richmond) got the rain? I know you can't control the weather, but TM I am done with you. I have tried twice to earn my orange headband and twice those attempts have been thwarted. I am taking it as a sign from God to be done with TM. It just wasn't meant to be. Maybe a Spartan Race should be on my race list?

My friend Heather at Relentless Forward Commotion summed up her thoughts on TM and OCRing in this post. It's a great article about what makes OCR what they are, the people! Even though, I will miss this amazing looking course layout and a chance to run with my OCR partner in crime Meagan, I will do another OCR and it will be amazing! I might not get that orange headband, but I will enjoy the race, whichever race it is, and the people that I am running, climbing, and crawling along side of.

Excericse Induced Asthma and You

That is the name of the pamphlet the doctor handed me after I complained of a tight chest and trouble breathing while running. JK. But I do apparently have exercise induced asthma. Lucky me.

Last summer and over the winter during several long runs and two races I all of a sudden had a tightness in my chest,  trouble breathing, and a tired heavy feeling in my extremities. I would walk for a minute and it would pass and I would pick right back up where I left off. I guess I should have been more alarmed than I was. I am not a good patient and just shrugged it off as probably asthma-like symptoms due to the weather/allergies/pollen/etc... Since this was happening more and more frequently I finally decided to get it checked out.

The doctor ordered several tests including; a spirometer,  an EKG,  and an echocardiogram. Thankfully, both the echo and EKG came back normal! I feel much better about getting shocked by 10,000 volts this coming weekend at Tough Mudder! The spirometer, however,  showed I did have some restrictions in my breathing. Not that I want asthma, but I was actually relieved that I am not just a very neurotic runner that is imagining all this!

The doctor gave me an albuterol inhaler to use prior to exercise and suggested that I bring it with me on long runs. Of course, being the very compliant patient I am I have done just that, on occasion. JK! I have, for most of my runs used the inhaler prior to running. I think it makes a difference, but it is so hard to tell. Anyone out there have exercise induced asthma that can tell me what their symptoms are like and when do they have the most trouble with it? (cold dry weather? hot humid? or doesn't it matter?)

Tough Mudder is in T-2 days. I am going to take my two puffs before we head out, but I am leaving it behind. I don't want to lose it in the mud or ice or water!

Happy National Running Day!

Yay! It’s National Running Day! Only runners would make up their own holiday. J
Are you going to run today? I am. I have a nice 4 mile run planned around the Atlantic Fleet. The sight of the nation’s ships in port and the brave men and women who man them is always an inspiration to me.
I have a lot of reasons why I run and have trouble narrowing it down. Exercise, stress relief, the challenge, oh the challenge. I like seeing what my body and my mind are capable of.

Race recap #2.....The Equi-Kids Cross Country 5K

My good friend Meagan (who was also at the Stingray and who will be holding my hand next week at Tough Mudder) signed me up for this race that took place on the beautiful grounds of Equi-Kids Therapeutic Riding Complex. Thanks Meagan!

The weather for this race was perfect! Amazing what a week can do to a weather forecast. The boys were loving the horses!

There was a really cute half mile kids run that Meagan's daughter did. Too cute! My older son was going to do it, but it sold out before we could get him a spot. Next year!

I felt good that day and after eying up the crowd, I thought I might have a chance at placing in my age group. I didn't realize until after the race that the a.g. was 30-39! A bit more competition. Since running the Flying Pirate Half and then the Stingray I have been feeling or not feeling a love of running like I used to. It has become a chore. So, to help renew my love of running I decided to ditch my Garmin and just run. Run based on how I feel, not what pace I think I should be hitting and then beat myself up when I don't hit it. So, I left my watch behind and ran.

I tried to settle into my pace early so I wouldn't poop out like I did the week before, but by the time I hit mile 1 I couldn't breathe again. What the heck! I am not out of shape and I wasn't sprinting. I decided to just enjoy the scenery and run as fast as my body would let me, which was almost a minute slower per mile than the week before. :( As a runner you know that this didn't sit well with me. Not that I am mad or even disappointed, but I was wondering what was going on with me? Over the winter I had several occasions while running our long runs that my chest tightened and I had trouble breathing to the point where I would have to walk until it passed. It happened on training runs and it happened at the Shamrock 8k and now I just can't breath. I was seriously wondering if I had exercise induced asthma. I finished in 26:55 and came in 3rd in my age group. 
The race itself was really nicely done. The horse farm was beautiful and the volunteers were great. I am so happy that I had opportunity to run this race. Three of the 4 races sold out. The only one that had any spots left was the run with your hound! I don't have a dog, but if I did he would be racing too!
Even my husband had a good time (I think). Thanks for coming to yet another race!! Love you!
Leaving my watch behind was a good decision. I have only run with it once since The Stingray and that was because I needed to do a long run and wanted to know mileage not pace. I hardly looked at it.
To address my last post about my last two races sucking, this race didn't suck. The weather was perfect, my family and friends were there, it was organized well. I just couldn't breath, again and that sucked. I made the decision that day to go see my doctor.....
