FOOD!


I have been on a baking/cooking spree! And it maybe Pinterests’ fault! I love to bake and cook and all those recipes just waiting to get pinned to my YUM board (could I be a bigger dork!), drive me to put on my apron (why yes, yes I could), pull out my Kitchen Aid, and get crackin’.

Since I joined Pinterest, I have pinned over 200 recipes to my YUM board and I have another board for all those fruity alcoholic libations. I don’t even drink mixed drinks. I guess they are for just in case I start throwing garden parties with Martha Stewart. WTH Pinterest?!?



It would look just like this. Except, I would hope to have guests at my party.

In contrast, I only have 64 pins to my RUNNNNN Board (big big dork). I love to run but my RUNNNN board has a little catching up to do. When I feel like loosing 2 hours of my life, I'll be sure to get on that. Pinterest is such a time sucker!

I have always liked to create in the kitchen. It all started with my Dad way back in the day. He would let me help make sauce or bake cookies. I have such great memories of being in the kitchen with him and I want my kids to have the same great memories. Plus, I don’t want them to think food comes from a box or a take-out menu. Besides, look at these faces….they are loving life!

I will say, that thanks to Pinterest, I have found an awesome blog with a million recipes, which I am steadily making my way through. If you haven’t been on Skinnytaste.com, you are missing out. If the photographs of the food aren’t enough to get you in the kitchen, you should know the recipes are easy and I have yet to be disappointed!

My favorite recipe so far was the Chipolte Lime Rice. It was fantastic! My husband, who is a rice purist (he loves it plain with a dash or 20 of soy sauce) loved this rice. This week I am going to make this...

Good thing I like to run. Not only have I made some new main dish recipes, I've also made a chocolate chip cookie pie, cake batter rice krispie treats, and brownies from scratch. These turned out terrible, but the boys (and I) still ate them! I am not sure why my sweet tooth is in overdrive lately? Not only am I concerned with the excess sugar my diet, I am trying to clean up our eating and don't want to contribute to the childhood obesity epidemic or give my kids dia-bet-is as Wilford Grimely would say, so I have been trying to offset my desire to create sugary treats with healthy nutrient rich smoothies.


These were strawberry banana with spinach and flax. They boys couldn't even tell!

I have been MIA from my blog lately, mostly because I have had nothing too exciting to blog about.  Plus,  I am still coming down from my half marathons and trying to let my body heal up and my mind find that loving feeling for running I have somewhat lost. I know in general where it is my love is hiding, but I haven’t been trying to really find it either.  We need our time apart.  It’s therapeutic for out relationship. Instead, I have been strength training, doing rehab for my angry ITB, and running when I can, as far as I can, before my knee pain stops me. I have also been enjoying all the “extra” time I have with my family. I say “extra” because I have zero extra time. But I have been making time with my kids a priority, another reason I have been MIA from social media.
Rehab has been going well. I have to give a shout out to my PT Dave, at Atlantic Physical Therapy here in the Beach. If you ever need the services of a good GREAT PT. Go see him. At my evaluation he did the normal tests for ITB tightness/hip strength, he videoed me running on the treadmill, and he also checked my pelvis. But he didn’t find anything jumping out at him. (I know there is a joke in there somewhere.)What he did find is that my gait is kind of funny, my pelvis is out of whack, and he informed me that my shoes might be contributing to the problem. So I am back in my NB 759 and attending therapy twice a week. At the last session my hips are finally starting to straighten out and my ITB is no longer point tender. I ran 5 miles on Monday with little to no pain, so I think I am on the comeback. Good thing too, because I have a 5k next weekend, The SJA Stingray 5k. It's a huge race, lots of Kenyans and prize $.  No, not really, just a small church 5k. It's fun and I have placed in my age group every time I do this race and I would like to keep it that way, although I won’t be surprised if I get smoked this year.
In Defense of Food: An Eater's ManifestoI have also been reading up on what "clean eating" is suppose to mean and started to re-evaulate what my family is putting in there bodies. After all, you are what you eat. I have seen some pretty disturbing stuff out there about artificial colors and chemical additives and their affects on children.  I have posted a couple of articles on my FB page, which you should LIKE if you haven't done so already. :) I always thought I ate relatively well compared to the average American. I have made it a point to give my kids whole foods and to limit the junk, but I have found this harder and harder to do as they get older and my time becomes more stretched. I buy organic when I feel rich, but the last time I checked on organic milk prices, my eyes buldged out of my head. I have a book on hold at the library, called In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. It's suppose to help guide you in choosing healther foods. I think I owe it to my family to get back on track with healthier selections and what better time of the year than now, in the spring, with fresh produce becoming readily available. I'll keep you posted on my journey into cleaner eating.

Burpees!


Burpees, no I am not talking about the seed company that supplies us with things like tomato plants for our gardens. I am talking about BURPEES, the no nonsense full body push-up/plank/squat jump combo that will kick your butt!
I saw on a Crossfit FB page that the WOD was 100 burpees for time. That’s it. No other exercise for the day. This got me thinking….could I do this? Could I do 100 burpees in one sitting, so to speak? And if so, how long would it take? I know I can knock out 30, but 100?
So I set off to challenge myself.

There are a ton of different ways to do a burpee. I did a standard burpee with a push-up.

No not me, just some clip art. I don't wear sport bras and tight pants to work out in. Plus I did a jump at the end.

I did a quick warm-up on the bike and stretched out. I set my timer and I was off. In 6 minutes and 18 seconds, I did 70 burpees. I was surprised that my legs fatigued faster than my arms. A couple of times my legs buckled on the jump and I barely got off the ground. I also, took a couple rests to catch my breath. I am not sure why I stopped at 70, probably because I was sucking wind and a bit nauseous. But I think I can do the full 100 and I am going to give it another go next week.
I want more people to catch burpee fever.   So, I am going to try and get my local chapter of Moms RUN This Town in on the fun and throw out a burpee challenge to them. I need to work out the details, but I  want it to be fun and more of a competition with ourselves than with each other.  Plus doing burpees will help with explosive power which in turn will help us be better runners. At least that is what I am going to tell them to get them sucked into doing days and days of burpees!

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes

It has been a month since I ran the Shamrock Half Marathon. It has also been a month since this whole IT band nonsense started. You can read about my ITB here and here. I have been self treating and it has gotten a little better, but I can't get past 4 miles without the stabbing pain. It sucks. So I made an appointment to go see my friend and physical therapist.


I went in on Friday and got a full evaluation. My IT band is not tight, it doesn't have any adhesions, and my muscles are strong (well, mostly). Which means I shouldn't be hurting, but I am.

So what did he find? When I walk, my left foot slightly turns in and the right is pretty neutral. I was videotaped while running from the back and side. And from that he said I looked normal, but he needs to review my footage, hahaha. (I don't know why that sounds funny to me it just does.) And my pelvis is malaligned. Which isn't breaking news for me. I have had SI joint problems since college. This flares up now and again. I don't think there is a correlation. 

He did comment on my shoes. Which I was really happy with when I got them. You can see my post here. I switched to Brooks Ghost after my NB 759 were discontinued and the new model didn't feel right. These Brooks have a huge lip on them, which I did notice in the past and didn't think anything of. (I have wide feet so I wear wide shoes.)  He has had a couple other people who wear these shoes have problems. I really would love to pin it on my shoes. What an easy fix, right?  I also have something going on with my ankle and I am not sure if there is a correlation.


I have two appointments scheduled this week.  I am going to continue with my strengthening and he is going to work on releasing my piriformis and straightening out my plevis. In the meantime, I am going to try some runs in my old shoes. They are still in ok shape, just a little muddy, to see if there is any difference.

What I have been up to...

Where have I been you ask? I haven't been blogging that much lately, because I have been busy winning virtual runs and contests! Yippie!!

Last month, I won a HEADSWEATS Visor from Moms RUN This Town and this month I won a $30 Lululemon gift card from from Run With Jess's Jelly Bean Virtual Race (you can read the race recap here)!

I am so excited about both of these things, mainly, because I NEVER win anything when it is left to pure old luck. Maybe my luck is changing, so today I entered into the Joggermom Marathon 2012. For a measily $10 you are entered into winning one of 5 high end jogging strollers and several other amazing prizes. All you have to do (besides forking over $10) is run 26.2 miles during the month of May and it DOES NOT have to be all at the same time! How easy is that!?!? I also entered into The Boring Runners give-a-way for a pair of NB 890's. You have time to enter into both of these contests. TBR goes until the 23rd and you can sign-up for the 'marathon' until April 30th. Make sure you tell the peeps at Joggermom Courtney sent you!

IT Band, Lumpia & Pancit, and Sticker Books

I ran 3.9 pain free wonderful miles today!! My IT band didn't act up until the last 0.1 mile and I was ok with that. I felt great, it was the best run I had had in a while.

I also ate my weight in pancit and lumpia. I was in a Filipino food induced coma by noon. I don't know what it is about lumpia, but I eat it like it's potato chips, popping one after another into my mouth until I am about to burst. I am so glad I don't have regular access to them. If you don't know what lumpia is, they are the Filipino version of a spring roll dipped in crack. Pair that up with pancit and you have yourself a  highly caloric meal of pure bliss. A...wait for it...MAZING!

After my binge, the last thing I wanted to do was workout and I had the elliptical on my schedule today. My IT band is still hurting me, I only made it 2 miles on Monday. I decided yesterday to do some p90x yoga and stick to the elliptical until I could get this thing under control. What can I say, I am desperate for this to resolve, I even made a PT appointment for Friday. 

After doing yoga, I realized I am one inflexible girl. I even had an epiphany while running today...now that I am getting older, I need to take time to warm-up before I run and strength train. I also need to stretch regularly. DUH. My excuse has always been that I just don't have time. But, I really need to take the time or I won't have anything but time, since I won't be running. I am even doing some research and I am going to incorporate movement prep into my pre-run routine. I am reading Core Performance Endurance, by Mark Verstergen. It's good stuff and it's stuff I should be and know I should be doing. Core Perfromance has  a great FB page, I get tons of info from them and actually incorporate some of it into my work. You should check them out.

So, what happened to the elliptical you ask? Well, I hate the elliptical, so I thought I would try the treadmill, if it hurt I would stop and finish out my time on the elliptical. But as you know, it didn't hurt, and I got to enjoy a great run! Yeah me!

I also got to spend some good quality time with my boys today. We made sticker books. You know you had one when you were little. I used craft paper to make mine today. I think my childhood one was an old school photo album.

The sitcker books were an after thought. As a parent you can't always be proactive.

Another Virtual Run Done



Today I finished The Jelly Bean Virtual Run! I'm so happy that I was able to run it again this year. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to do it due to my ailing ITB, but it seems to be doing much better and I was able to do the 5k on Monday and today I toughed out the 10k, with only a little discomfort in my knee..

Monday's run started off questionable. I decided to do it on the treadmill, so that if it ended up bothering me I wouldn't have to turn around and walk all the way back. The entire first mile I could feel the tightness that occurs right before the stabbing pain sets in, but at some point it just went away and I remember thinking, FANTASTIC, I feel fantastic! I ended up finishing feeling very optimistic and relieved.

I ran again on Wednesday. This time a 4 mile tempo run. I was going to do 5 but I thought, 1. I shouldn't push it and 2. I was exhausted from my children thinking night-time is for anything but sleep! Regardless my knee still felt good.

Today was the big test for my knee. I set out to complete the 10k. I have been good; doing my rehab and resting my knee, trying not to push too far too fast. After the other relatively pain free runs this week, I felt optimistic heading out the door. I decided to run a 6 mile loop. At about the three mile mark my knee started to bother me, but I was able to keep going and finish. (It is not ready for 6 miles.)

I promised Patrick I would stop at the playground along the way, but all the running tired him out, and he fell asleep. I did wake him at the playground, but he didn‘t want anything to do with it, so we headed home. (And no, it wasn’t as cold as it looks. I totally over dressed him. He probably fell asleep because he was baking! My bad.)

My friends Jim and Aimee also ran the 10k over the weekend near their home in PA. They are gearing up for The Hersey 10k in a few weeks and their first half marathon in the fall. Good luck you two!

Spirit of the Marathon

I took the boys to the our local library on Friday. My oldest wanted to get his own library card because Caillou got one and he thought he should have one too. I am all about promoting literacy so off to the library we went. My son got his library card and told me that I didn't need to help him get his books, but it came out like "Mom, stop hovering! I can do this myself and I don't want your help." WTH? Two days ago he asked me to wipe his bum, but I can't help him with library books??? Anyway, back to my story...

While he was  looking for books, and the little one was playing with the toys, I was looking at the DVD's. (It's amazing what you can get at the library these days, watch out Redbox!) I was looking for something that my husband would actually watch with me and right before I grabbed Hot Tub Time Machine, I saw them...Spirit of the Marathon and Running the Saraha. SCORE!

At this point I could care less if I had something to snuggle up on the couch and watch with my husband.  These are must sees for the running obsessed. I figured I would have to watch parts of them over the weekend when my TV wasn't being over run with sports, PBSkids, or the Wii, BUT and this is a huge BUT, my 2 year old watched Spirit of the Marathon with me! It was his idea too!

Right after dinner, while I was helping clean up the kitchen he said "Mommy, watch running guys." Who am I to say no to such a cute little endurance athlete in the making!  So with the dinner dishes everywhere I poured myself another glass of wine (hey it was Friday) and snuggled up on the couch with my Sweet P.


If you haven't seen Spirit of the Marathon it is about 6 runners preparing for The Chicago Marathon, including Deena Castor, Olympic Bronze Medalist and holder of too many records to list here. They also follow first timers and repeat marathoners while giving a history of the marathon.

Nerd Alert!!!! Nerd Alert!!!!

Did you know that the marathon was only 25 miles until the British Royalty stepped in and increased it by 1.2  miles so they could view it from the comfort of their thrones without mingling with the common folk? Well, it's true, the movie said so. My favorite part has more to do with women in sport than the actual people training for the marathon.


Katherine Switzer was the first women to run the Boston Marathon in 1967. She registered under K. Switzer and it wasn't until the actual race did they figure out she was a woman. That guy in the photo is trying to force her off the course. Well, she didn't leave and finished the race. I not only love this story because I am a woman but because I got to teach my 5 year old a lesson about women's equality. He asked why won't they her run? And I told him because men used to think that girls couldn't do what boys can. He looked at me funny, got up, spun around on one foot, turned to me and said "can girls do that?"  Dead serious. Mental head slap. "Yes buddy, girls can do that. In fact girls can do anything boys can do (but we do it better)." He looked at me suspiciously, but I know I got the message out there.

All in all, I felt motivated and inspired by the athletes in the movie. At times I was even tearing up. Maybe it was the wine, but that movie had me ready to sign up for a marathon. (Even though I have sworn them off until the boys are older.) It had me thinking, I can do this. What a great feeling of accomplishment it will be to complete something like this. Needless to say I was moved.


On the other hand...Running the Sahara, well, lets just say it was a good thing I was drinking. I definitely give the guys props for running for 111 consecutive days, traveling over 4,300 miles. It is no doubt an amazing accomplishment, not only for running that far and for that long, but for what they endured along the run, but Charlie annoyed me. He was such a baby. He acted like he was he tired or something. To save you some time I will give a a brief over view of the movie; three guys run, every day, for 111 days. Oh, and there is sand, lots of sand. Got it? I just saved you two hours of your life.* You're welcome.  

*I think it was two hours, I kind of zoned out after a while.
